Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Bhairavparvat Peetha marks where the upper lip of Sati fell on Bhairav Parvat (Bhairav's Hill) near Ujjain. The Goddess is Avanti ("the Eternal") and the Bhairav is Lambkarna (the Long-Eared). Note that this is distinct from the Ujayini Peetha (#13, wrist) — Ujjain contains two Shakti Peethas, reflecting the extraordinary sacred concentration of this ancient city. Bhairav Parvat hill, with its Bhairavnath temple, overlooks the Shipra river.

The dual Peethas of Ujjain — Avanti (upper lip, Bhairav Parvat) and Mangal Chandika (wrist, Ujayini) — together make Ujjain a uniquely dense Shakti-Shaiva pilgrimage site. The upper lip falling on the hill of the Bhairav creates a direct symbolic connection: the Bhairav guards the divine mouth from which sacred speech (mantra, prayer, the Vedas) emerges. Avanti — meaning eternal, or the name of the ancient Avanti kingdom — places this Peetha in deep historical time.
