Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Godavaritir Peetha marks where the right cheek of Sati fell on the Godavari riverbank. The Goddess is Vishveshi ("the female Lord of all worlds" — a feminine form of Vishweshwara, Lord of the Universe) and the Bhairav is Dandpani (the Staff-Bearer). Koti Teertha on the Godavari is a sacred bathing site (teertha) of great antiquity — one of a series of sacred confluences and bathing ghats along the Godavari that form the river's continuous pilgrimage landscape.

The two cheek Peethas — Sarvashail (left cheek) and Godavaritir (right cheek) — being both located in the Godavari valley reflects the river's supreme position in south Indian sacred geography. The two cheeks of the Goddess framing the Godavari valley on either side creates a beautiful divine cartography of the river. Vishveshi — the feminine form of Shiva's name "Vishweshwara" — represents the Goddess as the Lord of all visible reality.
