Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Jalandhar Peetha enshrines the breast of Sati, and the Goddess is Tripurmalini — "she who is adorned with the three worlds (lokas)" — one of the most cosmic names given to any Peetha goddess, suggesting a deity who contains the entirety of creation within herself. The Bhairav is Bhishan (the Terrible). The temple is located in or near Jalandhar city, Punjab, making it the most accessible of the Peethas for pilgrims from the Punjab plains region.

Jalandhar is one of the ancient cities of the Doab (the land between two rivers) and has been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. The Shakti Peetha here connects to the ancient goddess traditions of the greater Punjab — a region that has always had a particularly strong Shakti devotional culture, expressed in the veneration of Vaishno Devi, Jwalamukhi, Chintpurni and Naina Devi alongside this lesser-known but canonical Peetha.
