Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Lanka Peetha marks where the anklets of Sati fell on the island of Lanka — modern Sri Lanka. The Goddess is Indrani ("the Queen of Heaven" — consort of Indra, king of the gods) and the Bhairav is Rakshaseshwar (Lord of the Rakshasas — Shiva as lord even of the demon race). The Lanka Peetha carries extraordinary mythological resonance: Lanka was Ravana's kingdom, Sita's prison, and the site of Rama's ultimate victory. The anklets of the Goddess falling at Lanka suggest a cosmic walking, a divine circumambulation that reaches even the most distant and mythologically charged of islands.

Sri Lanka's Hindu sacred landscape is rich — the Munneswaram temple (associated with Rama's prayers before crossing to Lanka), the Nainativu (Nagadipa) island temple, the Thiruketheeswaram Shiva temple, and the Koneswaram temple at Trincomalee are among the most important. The Seetha Amman temple at Nuwara Eliya (believed to be in Ashoka Vatika where Sita was held) connects the Lanka Peetha to Sita's captivity. The island as a whole is a Ramayana pilgrimage landscape.
