Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Manibandh Peetha at Pushkar marks where the two wristlets of Sati fell. The Goddess is Gayatri — the mother of all the Vedas, the solar feminine intelligence embodied in the Gayatri mantra, the most sacred mantra in Hinduism chanted daily by millions. The Bhairav is Sarvanand (the Bliss of All). Pushkar is a uniquely sacred town — home to the only functioning Brahma temple in India and a sacred lake whose bathing is believed to wash away all sins.

The Gayatri Mantra (Om Bhur Bhuva Sva, Tat Savitur Varenyam…) is addressed to the solar Goddess Savitri/Gayatri — the same Shakti enshrined at this Peetha. The Gayatri temple on the Ratnagiri hill above Pushkar (the Savitri temple, another Shakti site) and the Manibandh Peetha together make Pushkar one of the most Shakti-significant sites in Rajasthan. The Pushkar Camel Fair (November) combines pilgrimage with one of India's most spectacular cultural events.
