Twin sister goddesses on a forested hilltop above the Rushikulya river — one of the most powerful and most visited Shakti Peethas in eastern India.
Taratarini is unique among the 51 Peethas for enshrining two goddesses together — Tara ("she who saves") and Tarini ("she who carries across") — atop a hill overlooking the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district, Odisha. The breasts of Sati fell here, and this twin-deity tradition is believed to reflect an ancient, pre-Puranic layer of goddess worship onto which the later Sati mythology was overlaid, making Taratarini one of the archaeologically and theologically richest Shakti sites in the eastern tradition.
The temple draws millions of pilgrims annually from across Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, making it one of the most-visited Shakti Peethas outside Bengal and Assam. The Magha Purnima festival (February–March) is the temple's greatest event, when hundreds of thousands of devotees climb the hill and take a ritual dip in the Rushikulya below — a scene of mass devotion set against forested hills and river views that rivals any pilgrimage gathering in eastern India.
Nearest railway: Berhampur (30 km), with regular OSRTC buses to the hill base. A ropeway carries pilgrims to the summit alongside the traditional forest footpath.
October to February is most pleasant; Magha Purnima (February–March) is the principal festival and the most crowded period.
Walk down through the forest path even if you take the ropeway up — the descent through the trees is one of the most atmospheric experiences at any Odisha shrine.
The Breasts of Goddess Sati fell at Taratarini, consecrating this land as a Shakti Peetha. The Shakti here is Tara and Tarini (twin sister goddesses) and the guardian Bhairav is Bhairava of Ganjam.
