The right leg of Sati — Tripur Sundari, the most beautiful in the three worlds, in the sacred capital of the ancient Tripura kingdom.
The Tripura Peetha at Udaipur, Tripura, marks where the right leg of Sati fell. The Goddess is Tripur Sundari — "the most beautiful in the three worlds" — one of the ten Mahavidyas and the supreme form of the Goddess in the Tantric tradition of Sri Vidya. The Bhairav is Tripuresh (Lord of the Three Cities). The temple at Udaipur is a Navaratna (nine-jewel) style structure whose reflection in the adjacent lake creates one of the most beautiful temple vistas in northeast India.
Tripura Sundari (also called Shodashi, Lalita or Rajarajeswari) is the supreme deity of the Sri Vidya tradition — a sophisticated Tantric practice whose practitioners revere her as the full manifestation of consciousness, bliss and beauty. The 15-syllable (Panchadashi) or 16-syllable (Shodashi) mantra of Tripura Sundari is considered the most powerful mantra in the Shakta tradition. The temple at Udaipur has been a centre of Sri Vidya practice for centuries.
By road from Agartala: 55 km. Agartala Airport has flights from Kolkata, Guwahati and Delhi. Udaipur station is on the Sabroom railway line from Agartala.
Year-round. Navratri (twice yearly) and Kali Puja (October) are the main festivals. The reflection of the temple in the lake is most dramatic in the monsoon season (July–September).
The boat ride on Maharani Sagar lake to view the temple reflection is one of the finest visual experiences at any northeast Indian Shakti Peetha.
The Right Leg of Goddess Sati fell at Tripura, consecrating this land as a Shakti Peetha. The Shakti here is Tripur Sundari and the guardian Bhairav is Tripuresh.
