Ajmer Sharif Dargah

India's most revered Sufi shrine — the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, visited by devotees of every faith for over 800 years.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah
Overview

A Shrine Beyond Religious Boundaries

Ajmer Sharif Dargah enshrines the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the 12th-century Sufi saint who founded the Chishti order in India and whose teachings of universal love and service profoundly shaped South Asian Islam's syncretic character. The dargah has drawn devotees continuously for over eight centuries, with Mughal emperors including Akbar making the pilgrimage on foot from Agra as an act of devotion, and rulers of every faith historically endowing the shrine with patronage.

What distinguishes Ajmer Sharif most is its genuinely pluralistic following — Hindu, Sikh and other non-Muslim devotees visit alongside Muslim pilgrims in numbers rarely seen at other major Islamic shrines, drawn by Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti's reputation as "Gharib Nawaz" (Benefactor of the Poor) and a saint whose blessing transcends religious boundaries. The annual Urs festival commemorating his death anniversary draws millions across a week of qawwali music, communal prayer and intense devotional energy.
