The three-faced Jyotirlinga representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — at the sacred source of the Godavari river.
Trimbakeshwar is unique among the twelve Jyotirlingas in that the lingam here has three faces representing the Hindu Trinity — Brahma (creator), Vishnu (preserver) and Shiva (destroyer). The temple is located in Trimbak town, approximately 28 km from Nashik in Maharashtra, at the foothills of the Brahmagiri mountain where the sacred Godavari river originates.
The Godavari — known as the "Ganga of the South" — rises from a spring on the Brahmagiri mountain and flows for 1,465 km across central and peninsular India before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The origin point of this great river at Trimbakeshwar is considered supremely sacred. Nashik (along with Trimbak) is one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela, held once every twelve years.
The current temple was built by the Peshwa Nana Sahib (Balaji Baji Rao) between 1755 and 1786 CE, replacing an older structure destroyed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The temple's construction took over three decades and represents one of the finest examples of Hemadpanthi-influenced Nagara architecture in Maharashtra, built with black Basalt stone from the surrounding hills.
The unique three-faced lingam (Trimbaka Jyotirlinga) is enclosed in a silver mask. The three faces are periodically adorned with gems and gold ornaments. Only men are permitted to enter the inner sanctum and physically touch the Jyotirlinga — an unusual distinction among the twelve shrines.
Kala Sarpa Dosha puja, believed to neutralise the malefic effects of the Kala Sarpa yoga in a person's birth horoscope, is performed exclusively at Trimbakeshwar and Tryambakeshwar. This makes the temple a major destination not just for Shiva devotees but for Hindu families from across India seeking astrological remedies, creating a steady year-round footfall.
