Saptapuri Seven Sacred Cities
Moksha-dayini Puri

Seven Gateways to Liberation

The Garuda Purana names seven cities — moksha-dayini puri, "liberation-granting cities" — where death itself is believed to release the soul from samsara, the cycle of rebirth: Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar (Maya), Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchipuram, Avantika (Ujjain) and Dwarka. Each city is associated with a different facet of the divine — from Rama's birthplace to Krishna's legendary kingdom — together forming the most theologically significant pilgrimage itinerary in Hindu tradition.

Unlike circuits defined by a single deity or sect, the Saptapuri spans Vaishnava, Shaiva and Shakta tradition alike, reflecting a shared pan-Hindu understanding of sacred geography that has drawn pilgrims across the subcontinent for well over two thousand years.
