Mythology & Significance

Sacred History

Ambaji temple, on the Gujarat-Rajasthan border near Mount Abu, marks where the heart of Goddess Sati fell. Unlike most temples, there is no anthropomorphic idol in the main sanctum — devotion is offered to the Vishya Yantra, a gold-plated geometric diagram representing the formless, infinite nature of the Goddess. This aniconic worship tradition places Ambaji among the most theologically sophisticated Shakti shrines in India, emphasising that the divine feminine transcends any single visual form.

The temple sits in the Arasur hills of the Aravalli range, with the sacred Gabbar Hill rising nearby, where the Goddess is believed to have meditated and where her original footprints are venerated. The Bhadarvi Purnima fair each August–September is one of Gujarat's largest religious gatherings, drawing over a million pilgrims across five days who walk for days from across the state to reach the temple — a living tradition of devotion comparable to the great walking pilgrimages of Maharashtra.
