Bimala Devi (also called Vimala) holds a position unlike any other Shakti Peetha in India — her shrine sits within the precincts of the Jagannath Temple at Puri, one of the four sacred Char Dham, marking where the navel of Sati fell. This extraordinary overlap between a major Vaishnava Char Dham site and a Shakti Peetha makes Puri a uniquely dense convergence point of two of Hinduism's great devotional traditions in a single temple complex.
According to established temple tradition, the Mahaprasad — food first offered to Lord Jagannath — only becomes fully sanctified prasad after being subsequently offered to Goddess Bimala, a ritual sequence performed without fail. This daily practice reflects a profound theological principle: that Shakti (the goddess's power) must complete and validate even Vishnu's own offerings, a rare and explicit acknowledgement of feminine divine primacy within an otherwise Vaishnava-centred temple.
Within the Jagannath Temple complex, Puri — reached via the same entrance as the main temple. Puri is well connected by rail from Bhubaneswar (60 km) and Kolkata.
October to March for comfortable temple-going weather; Rath Yatra (June–July) is Puri's greatest festival, though Bimala's own rituals continue daily regardless.
