Sacred History

Chamunda Devi temple sits on the banks of the Baner river in the Kangra Valley, one of five major Shakti shrines in Himachal Pradesh. According to the Devi Mahatmya, the Goddess Chamunda emerged from the furrowed brow of Durga in the heat of battle against the demons Chanda and Munda — her name itself a fusion of theirs, commemorating her victory. She is depicted in her most fearsome iconography: emaciated, fanged, garlanded with skulls, embodying the power that destroys ignorance and ego at their root.

The temple's setting amid dense deodar forest, with the sound of the Baner river running beside it, creates a deeply meditative atmosphere distinct from the busier Himachal shrines nearby. Pilgrims often combine Chamunda Devi with the other four Himachal Peethas — Jwalamukhi, Naina Devi, Chintpurni and Brajeshwari — completing what devotees call the "Himachal Char Dham" of the Goddess.
