Sacred History

Vaishno Devi, enshrined in a natural cave at 5,200 feet in the Trikuta Hills near Katra, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites on earth. The Goddess is worshipped here in the form of three naturally occurring rock formations called Pindis, representing the unified power of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati — the three primary forms of Adi Shakti. There is no carved idol; the Pindis themselves, draped in red cloth and crowned, are the object of worship, making this one of the purest aniconic Shakti traditions in India.

According to legend, Vaishno Devi was a devout girl named Vaishnavi who attained divine power through her devotion to Vishnu. The demon Bhairon Nath pursued her through these mountains; she fled through the very landscape pilgrims walk today, transformed into Mahakali at the cave, and beheaded him. As he lay dying, Bhairon repented and was granted liberation, which is why the pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi traditionally concludes with a visit to the Bhairon Nath temple above the main cave — the yatra is considered incomplete without it.
