Brahmasarovar

The vast sacred bathing tank at Kurukshetra — among the holiest waters in north India, drawing millions of pilgrims during solar eclipses.

Brahmasarovar
Overview

The Holiest Tank in the Mahabharata Land

Brahmasarovar, one of the largest sacred water tanks in India, lies at the heart of Kurukshetra, the legendary battlefield of the Mahabharata. According to tradition, Lord Brahma performed a yajna here at the dawn of creation, consecrating its waters with extraordinary purifying power. The tank has been a centre of pilgrimage for millennia, mentioned in the Mahabharata itself as a site of ritual bathing and penance.

The tank draws its largest crowds during solar and lunar eclipses, when astrological tradition holds that bathing here carries merit equivalent to bathing at the Ganga during the Kumbh Mela — drawing millions of pilgrims from across north India within a matter of hours. The International Gita Mahotsav, held annually around Gita Jayanti, transforms the tank's surroundings into a major cultural and spiritual festival with classical music, dance and religious discourse.
