The Festival of Festivals
The Hornbill Festival, held every December at the purpose-built Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, brings together all of Nagaland's major tribes in a ten-day celebration of indigenous Naga culture, named for the hornbill bird central to Naga tribal symbolism and folklore. Each tribe maintains its own traditional morung (community house) at Kisama, where visitors can witness authentic tribal customs, warrior dances, indigenous games and ancestral rituals rarely seen outside this setting.
Beyond its cultural spectacle, the Hornbill Festival functions as a living act of preservation — a deliberate gathering point where ancient tribal sacred traditions, increasingly pressured by modernity, are actively performed, transmitted and celebrated by the very communities who hold them. For visitors, it offers an unparalleled window into the indigenous spiritual landscape of Northeast India, including traditional music, headhunting-era warrior culture (now purely ceremonial) and tribal cuisine.
