The golden goddess on Indrakeeladri Hill, overlooking the Krishna river — one of Andhra Pradesh's most important Shakti shrines.
Kanaka Durga Temple crowns Indrakeeladri Hill above Vijayawada, where the Goddess Durga is believed to have resided after slaying the demon Mahishasura, her continuing presence sanctifying the hill and the Krishna river flowing beside it. The temple's commanding position over the river and city has made it the spiritual anchor of Vijayawada, one of Andhra Pradesh's most significant urban centres.
Kanaka Durga's association with the Krishna river gives the temple a dual sanctity — devotees combine darshan at the hilltop shrine with a ritual dip in the river below, a pairing of mountain and water worship characteristic of many of South India's most powerful Shakti sites. Navratri transforms the temple and surrounding hill into one of Andhra Pradesh's largest religious gatherings, with continuous worship through the nine nights.
Centrally located in Vijayawada, easily reached from the railway station and bus stand.
October to March; Navratri (twice yearly) is the temple's most significant period.
A ropeway and stepped pathway both connect the base to the hilltop temple.
A ritual bath in the Krishna river below is traditionally paired with the hill darshan.
