The Lake That Changes Colour

Pangong Tso stretches 134 km across the Ladakh-Tibet border at an altitude of 4,350 metres, two-thirds of it lying in Chinese-administered territory. Its waters shift through extraordinary shades of blue, turquoise and green through the day, a phenomenon tied to its high mineral content and the angle of Himalayan light — a sight that has made it both a place of contemplative pilgrimage for local Buddhist communities and one of Ladakh's most visited natural wonders.

For Ladakhi Buddhists, Pangong Tso and its surrounding monasteries form part of a sacred landscape where lakes, like Manasarovar near Kailash, are understood as purifying and consciousness-elevating sites. Small gompas dot the route to the lake, and pilgrims often combine a visit here with Hemis, Thiksey and other Leh-area monasteries as part of a wider Ladakhi spiritual circuit.
