One of Sikkim's oldest and most important monasteries, famed for its intricate seven-tiered wooden model of Guru Rinpoche's celestial abode.
Pemayangtse ("Perfect Sublime Lotus") Monastery, founded in 1705, ranks among the oldest and most senior monasteries of the Nyingma order in Sikkim, historically reserved for monks of pure Tibetan lineage (ta-tshang) and holding a status that once made its abbot a key figure in Sikkimese religious authority, alongside the Chogyal (king). Its hilltop position near Pelling offers commanding views across to Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak.
The monastery's most celebrated treasure is an extraordinary seven-tiered wooden sculpture depicting Zangdok Palri, the celestial abode of Guru Padmasambhava, crafted over years by a single monk and considered one of the finest examples of Buddhist devotional woodcraft in the Himalayas. The annual Chaam masked dance festival here continues a centuries-old tradition of ritual performance central to Sikkimese Buddhist practice.
Near Pelling, roughly 110 km from Gangtok by road.
March to May and October to December for clear Kanchenjunga views.
The annual masked dance festival (check lunar calendar dates) is a major draw.
Pelling's viewpoints and the nearby Rabdentse ruins complete a rich day of exploration.
