Rajim Kumbh Mela

A regional Kumbh Mela held at the sacred confluence of three rivers in February–March, sometimes called "Chhattisgarh's Prayag".

Rajim Kumbh Mela
Overview

The Triveni of Central India

Rajim sits at the confluence of the Mahanadi, Pairi and the mythical Sondhur rivers — a Triveni Sangam considered sacred enough to host its own regional Kumbh Mela, drawing pilgrims from across Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states each February-March. The town's Rajiv Lochan Temple, an ancient Vishnu shrine, anchors the religious significance of the confluence, with several other temples dotting the riverbank.

While smaller in scale than the four national Kumbh sites, the Rajim Kumbh Mela represents the same astrological and ritual logic — bathing at a sacred river confluence for spiritual purification — applied at a regional scale, reflecting how the Kumbh tradition has been replicated and adapted at numerous sacred confluences across India beyond the four most famous locations. The accompanying fair brings religious discourse, cultural performance and a significant gathering of regional Hindu communities.
