Forest Memory and Modern Conservation
The Vasona Reserve near Silvassa combines a managed wildlife safari park with surrounding forest areas where Warli and Dhodia communities have long maintained sacred grove traditions — patches of forest protected under customary taboo as the dwelling places of local deities and ancestral spirits, predating the area's more recent formal conservation designation by generations.
This overlap between contemporary wildlife conservation and indigenous sacred forest tradition illustrates a pattern found across tribal India: that the areas most successfully preserved ecologically are frequently those that local communities have protected for spiritual rather than purely environmental reasons, with modern conservation efforts increasingly recognising and building upon this older, sacred logic of forest protection.
