The golden geodesic sphere of Auroville — a meditation centre conceived as a space for inner peace, open to all without distinction of religion, nationality or creed.
The Matrimandir, the golden geodesic centrepiece of the experimental international township of Auroville, was conceived by the Mother as "a place for those who want to learn to live an integral yogic life" — a meditation space deliberately designed without religious iconography or doctrine, intended as what its founders called "the soul of Auroville," accessible to people of every nationality and faith pursuing inner growth and human unity.
Visitors prepare for entry to the Matrimandir's inner chamber — a perfectly still, white marble meditation room lit by a single ray of sunlight directed through an optical system onto a crystal at its centre — through a period of quiet orientation in the surrounding gardens, an intentional process designed to gradually still the mind before the silent inner experience. Auroville itself, founded in 1968, continues as a living experiment in international community and consciousness-focused living.
Auroville is roughly 10 km from Puducherry; advance online booking is required for Matrimandir inner-chamber visits.
November to February for the most comfortable weather for exploring the township.
Inner chamber meditation visits require advance registration through Auroville's visitor centre.
Silence and unhurried reflection are central to the intended Matrimandir experience.
