Founded by Sri Aurobindo Ghose — one of the most important modern spiritual institutions in India, visited by seekers from across the world.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram, founded in 1926 around the philosopher-yogi Sri Aurobindo and his collaborator known as the Mother (Mirra Alfassa), developed a distinctive spiritual philosophy called Integral Yoga, synthesising traditional Indian spiritual practice with an evolutionary vision of human consciousness striving toward what Aurobindo termed the "supramental" — a more complete realisation of the divine within material existence.
The ashram's serene, contemplative campus in the heart of Puducherry continues to attract spiritual seekers, scholars and visitors from across the world, its influence extending well beyond traditional Hindu devotional circles into broader currents of 20th-century spiritual and philosophical thought. The samadhi (memorial shrine) of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother within the ashram courtyard remains a focal point of quiet meditation for visitors of every background.
Centrally located in Puducherry, easily reached on foot from most parts of the old town.
