One of Goa's wealthiest temples — Durga worshipped here as the peacemaker who resolved a cosmic dispute between Vishnu and Shiva.
Shri Shanta Durga Temple, near Mangueshi at Kavalem, is dedicated to a distinctive form of the Goddess — Shanta Durga, "the peaceful Durga" — worshipped here specifically in her role as mediator who resolved a mythological dispute between Vishnu and Shiva, an unusual theological framing that emphasises reconciliation over the Goddess's more commonly depicted fierce, battle-ready aspects.
The temple's grand architecture, with its distinctive lamp tower and spacious courtyard, reflects the wealth and patronage it has attracted from Goan Hindu communities for centuries, including families who relocated here during the Portuguese colonial period's religious disruptions. Together with Mangueshi, Shanta Durga forms part of the essential pilgrimage circuit for Goan Hindus, particularly significant during Navratri and the temple's own annual festival calendar.
Kavalem is close to Priol, roughly 24 km from Panaji via Ponda.
October to March; Navratri is a particularly significant period at this temple.
Shri Mangueshi Temple is a short distance away, ideal for a combined visit.
Note the distinctive deepastambha lamp tower, characteristic of Goan temple design.
