Sukhna Lake

A tranquil man-made lake at the foothills of the Shivaliks, designed by Le Corbusier as a place of quiet reflection within India's most famous planned city.

Sukhna Lake
Overview

Stillness in a Planned City

Sukhna Lake was created in 1958 by damming the seasonal Sukhna Choe stream, conceived by architect Le Corbusier as an essential element of Chandigarh's urban design — a deliberate space for calm and contemplation amid the geometric rigour of the planned city. Framed by the Shivalik foothills, the lake has since become an informal site of evening reflection and prayer for residents and visitors of all faiths.

While not a traditional pilgrimage site, Sukhna Lake holds a quieter, contemporary sacred significance as a place where Chandigarh's residents gather at dawn and dusk for meditation, walking and prayer, with the rippling water and distant hills providing a natural counterpart to the devotional intensity of nearby Mansa Devi Temple. Many pilgrims visiting Mansa Devi combine the two as a single day of contrasting spiritual experiences — temple devotion and lakeside stillness.
