Overview

Fourteen Gods of the Tripuri People

The Chaturdasha Devata temple in Old Agartala enshrines fourteen deities central to the indigenous Tripuri religious tradition, predating and existing alongside the better-known Hindu Shakti Peetha tradition represented by Tripura Sundari. These fourteen gods, maintained through a distinctively Tripuri ritual system overseen by traditional priests, represent one of the most significant surviving indigenous tribal religious complexes in Northeast India.

The temple's annual Kharchi Puja festival, held in July, draws enormous crowds from across Tripura and is considered one of the state's most important religious occasions — a living demonstration of how indigenous Tripuri spiritual tradition continues to thrive as a distinct devotional system alongside the Hindu Shakta tradition embodied at Tripura Sundari, together forming Tripura's rich, layered sacred landscape.
