Neermahal Water Palace

A royal palace rising from the middle of Rudrasagar Lake — the only water palace in eastern India.

Neermahal Water Palace
Overview

A Palace Afloat

Neermahal, built between 1930 and 1938 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya of Tripura, stands on an artificial island in the middle of Rudrasagar Lake, blending Hindu and Islamic architectural styles in a manner distinctive among India's royal palaces. Conceived as a summer retreat for the Tripura royal family, the palace's reflection in the still lake waters creates one of the most photographed sights in Northeast India.

While not a temple in the conventional sense, Neermahal occupies an important place in Tripura's royal and cultural heritage, the Manikya dynasty having been deeply intertwined with the region's religious life — the same royal lineage that maintained the nearby Tripura Sundari Shakti Peetha at Udaipur. The palace today hosts a vibrant annual water festival, drawing visitors to its illuminated grounds and boat-accessible courtyards.
