Western India's Sacred Coast

Somnath, Dwarka and the Sacred Western Coast

Gujarat is among the most pilgrimage-rich states in western India. Its coastline alone contains the Jyotirlinga of Somnath, the Char Dham of Dwarka and the Jyotirlinga of Nageshwar — meaning a single coastal drive can visit two Jyotirlingas and a Char Dham site. The Shatrunjaya hill at Palitana contains over 900 Jain temples and is considered the holiest pilgrimage site in Jainism.

Gujarat's spiritual character is shaped by three overlapping traditions: the Vaishnava devotion to Krishna centred at Dwarka and Dakor, the Shaiva tradition of the Jyotirlingas, and the Jain pilgrimage tradition of Palitana and Girnar. Pushti Marg — the devotional path of Lord Shrinathji — was founded by Vallabhacharya and is deeply rooted in Gujarati culture. The town of Nathdwara in neighbouring Rajasthan is the centre of this tradition and is closely linked to Gujarat's pilgrimage culture.
