Home to Varanasi, Mathura, Ayodhya and Prayagraj — four of India's most sacred cities, all within one state, making Uttar Pradesh the unrivalled centre of Hindu pilgrimage.
Uttar Pradesh contains more UNESCO World Heritage Sites and ancient sacred cities than any other Indian state. Varanasi (Kashi) is among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities; Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Rama; Mathura and Vrindavan are the sacred land of Krishna's birth and childhood; and Prayagraj hosts the Kumbh Mela at the most sacred river confluence in the world.
The Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers all flow through or converge in Uttar Pradesh. The state is home to four of the seven Saptapuri cities (cities where liberation may be attained): Varanasi, Mathura, Ayodhya and Prayagraj-adjacent Kannauj. For any serious Hindu pilgrim, a journey through Uttar Pradesh is close to obligatory.
