Home to over 38,000 ancient temples, Tamil Nadu is the epicentre of Dravidian temple architecture and Shaiva-Vaishnava devotional tradition, anchored by Rameshwaram in the south and Kanchipuram in the north.
Tamil Nadu contains more ancient functioning temples than any other Indian state — an astonishing 38,000 temples, many predating 1,000 CE. The state's Dravidian architecture tradition — characterised by towering gopurams (gateway towers) covered in sculpted deities, enormous temple tank systems and kilometre-long corridors — represents one of humanity's greatest architectural achievements.
The Shaiva tradition of Tamil Nadu produced the Nayanmars — 63 poet-saints whose devotional hymns in Tamil (the Tevaram and Tiruvacakam) form the spiritual backbone of South Indian Shaivism. The Alvars, 12 Vaishnava saint-poets, similarly composed the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, identifying 108 sacred Vishnu shrines (Divya Desams) across the south. Tamil Nadu alone contains 84 of these 108 Divya Desam temples.
